OncologyEducation’s Best of ASCO® Conference is a program licensed by the American Society of Clinical Oncology and will be held virtually on July 8th, 2021. Chaired by Dr. Jamil Asselah and Dr. Kim Ma, the focus of this event will be to provide medical oncologists and other healthcare practitioners with a summary of the most significant treatment advances presented at the ASCO® 2021 Annual (digital) Meeting, with presentations focused on several key disease sites. The Best of ASCO® Montreal faculty will draw from some of Canada’s most influential oncologists.
• To summarize the most significant treatment advances presented at ASCO® 2021
• To review the current standard of care for key malignancies
• To discuss the current controversies in the management of specific cancers
Dr. Jamil Asselah. Trained in Algiers and Paris as a medical oncologist, Dr. Asselah completed a 2-year fellowship on phase 1 clinical trials at the Investigation Unit of the Curie Institute Cancer Centre in Paris, France. In 2008, he joined the Université de Sherbrooke as an Assistant Professor, developing new research protocols in breast cancer and standardizing treatment practices at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Sherbrooke, where he also launched the oncology residency program. He joined McGill in 2011 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Oncology and is now Associate Professor and Director of Oncology Undergraduate Medical Education. He is on staff as a medical oncologist at the McGill University Health Centre, where he spearheaded a working group standardizing treatment guidelines for breast cancer. He was the first Site Lead for the Rossy Cancer Network. Dr. Asselah has been the principal investigator in numerous clinical research protocols and has been part of several research groups at the provincial and national levels. His research interests include breast cancers, gastrointestinal cancers, and cancers of the head and neck. Dr. Asselah is a leader of the Opal team and has been involved in the development and implementation of Opal, an innovative patient portal at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) that provides patients with immediate access to their personal health information.
Dr. Kim Ma studied hematology, oncology, and internal medicine at McGill University in Montréal, Canada. Dr. Ma is a recipient of the J.W. McConnell Award, the Student Research Award F.R.S.Q., the Millennium Award of Excellence, the McGill Entrance Award, and the Science Award at McGill University. She has a special interest in thrombosis, and thus focuses much of her research in this area. Most recently, Dr. Ma helped investigate the ELOPE Study, which looked at serial imaging after pulmonary embolism and correlation with functional limitations.
