The Best of Oncology West 2020 Conference highlights the top 3-4 most clinically relevant achievements of 2019 for several tumour sites; faculty will be drawn from some of the most influential oncologists across the globe.
The Conference is chaired by Dr. Sharlene Gill and Dr. Anil Abraham Joy and will incorporate several multi-disciplinary event sessions addressing: radiation oncology, surgical oncology and supportive care.

Sharlene Gill, BSc (Pharm), MD, MPH, MBA, FACP, FRCP(C) BC Cancer
Dr. Sharlene Gill is a medical oncologist specializing in gastrointestinal (GI) malignancies at BC Cancer – Vancouver. She received a BSc. in Pharmacy, and MD from the University of British Columbia in 1996 followed by residencies in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology, subsequently completing a fellowship in Gl Oncology at the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN) and a Masters of Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health (Boston, MA) before returning to Vancouver where she is presently Professor of Medicine at the University of British Columbia.
In 2017, she completed an MBA from the Kenan-Flagler School of Business at the University of North Carolina. Her areas of clinical expertise are in colorectal, pancreatic and hepatobiliary cancers. She is actively engaged in education and research, with over 95 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters to her credit.
Her academic focus is in the areas of health outcomes and clinical trials research - she currently serves as the Chair for the GI Disease site of the Canadian Cancer Trials Group (CCTG).
Dr. Anil Abraham Joy, B.Sc., MD., FRCPC Professor, Department of Oncology, University of Alberta Division of Medical Oncology, Cross Cancer Institute, Medical Oncologist, Cross Cancer Institute Research Lead, Northern Alberta Breast Cancer Program
Dr. Anil Abraham Joy obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree (Honors with Distinction, Specialization in Pharmacology) and Medical Doctorate (Honors with Distinction) from the University of Alberta.
He is certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as a specialist in Internal Medicine with subspecialty certification in Medical Oncology. He has been a staff Medical Oncologist at the Cross Cancer Institute, since 2003. Dr. Joy was promoted to the rank of full academic Professor of Oncology (Division of Medical Oncology) at the University of Alberta in 2016.
His primary clinical care interests include Breast and Thoracic malignancies. He is actively involved in patient care, clinical research, medical education, cancer survivorship/advocacy and global oncology/regional disparity issues.
He has previously served in various roles for the Medical Council of Canada, as a grant reviewer to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (Prairies / NWT) and National Cancer Institute of Canada / Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute and continues to serve as a reviewer to various organizations and oncology journals.
His former appointments include serving as a member on the Steering Committee on Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Care and Treatment of Breast Cancer, past Chair of the Northern Alberta Breast Cancer Program, as well as Provincial Chair of the Alberta Breast Cancer Program and Medical Director (Edmonton) of the Alberta Cancer Research Biobank (former CBCF Tumor Bank).
He was appointed (2015) and currently serves on the pan-Canadian Oncology Drug Review (pCODR) Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health (CADTH) Expert Review Committee (pERC).
